what is polystyrene
Polystyrene, or PS for short, is a polymer synthesized by free radical polymerization from styrene monomers. Its characteristics include low density, colorless and transparent appearance, high gloss, low shrinkage rate, high rigidity, resistance to γ-rays, good chemical and water resistance, good UV stability, good flowability, and easy molding and processing. However, it is brittle, prone to cracking under stress, and can produce many silver lines. The melt strength is high, making it a colorless and transparent thermoplastic material with a glass transition temperature above 100°C. Therefore, it is often used to make various disposable containers that need to withstand boiling water, as well as disposable foam lunch boxes.
Polystyrene is mainly divided into the following categories according to its shape and performance:
General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS)
High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
Expandable Polystyrene (EPS).
GPPS
Good transparency and rigidity are often used in the manufacture of products that have requirements for appearance and transparency, such as food containers and disposable supplies.
HIPS
Modified by adding rubber particles to ordinary PS, it has better toughness and impact resistance and is often used in the shell of electrical products and toy manufacturing.
EPS
Formed by an injecting blowing agent, it has excellent thermal and sound insulation properties and is widely used in construction and packaging fields. Especially in the field of food service, such as foam cups.
PS
There are various methods for processing and forming polystyrene products, such as injection molding, extrusion, foaming, blow molding, and thermoforming.
