PP Chemical Modification

Through copolymer modification, cross-linking modification, graft modification, nucleating agents, etc., polypropylene polymer components and macromolecular structure or crystal configuration changes to improve its mechanical properties, heat resistance, aging resistance and other properties to enhance its comprehensive performance and expand its application areas.

• Graft modification

PP (polypropylene) resin molecules are non-polar crystalline linear structure, low surface activity, non-polar. It has the disadvantages of poor surface printability; poor coating bonding; difficult to blend with polar polymers; difficult to be compatible with polar reinforcing fibers and fillers. Grafting modification is to introduce polar groups to its macromolecular chain to achieve improved blending, compatibility and bonding of PP, to overcome the disadvantages of difficult blending, compatibility and bonding. Under the action of initiator, the grafting reaction of grafting monomer is carried out during melt blending, and the initiator decomposes when heated and melted to produce active free groups, and when the active free groups encounter unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, the unstable bonds of unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer are prompted to open and react with PP active free groups to form grafting free groups, which are subsequently terminated by molecular chain transfer reaction. The common grafting modification methods of PP are: melt method, solution method, solid phase method, suspension method, etc. After graft modification, the hydrogen atoms in the PP molecular chain are replaced and show strong polarity, and these polar groups make PP more compatible and its heat resistance and mechanical properties are greatly improved.
