When it comes to sustainable biopolymers, two popular options are PBAT and PLA. PBAT stands for polybutylene adipate terephthalate, while PLA stands for polylactic acid. Both are used as alternatives to traditional petroleum-based plastics, but there are some key differences between the two.
Firstly, PBAT is a thermoplastic elastomer, meaning it can be molded into various shapes and maintain flexibility and durability. It is often used for products such as compostable plastic bags and biodegradable food containers. On the other hand, PLA is a rigid bioplastic that is commonly used for 3D printing and food packaging.
Another difference is in the production process. PBAT is produced using non-renewable fossil fuels as a starting material, but it is considered biodegradable because it breaks down into smaller molecules through exposure to sunlight, heat, and microorganisms. PLA, on the other hand, is made from renewable resources such as corn starch, sugarcane, and cassava root, and it also biodegrades through exposure to these same conditions.
Additionally, PBAT has a lower melting temperature than PLA, making it easier to process and manufacture. However, it also means that it is not as heat-resistant as PLA.
