How is PP manufactured?
As with other plastics, it starts with the "fractions" (lighter groups) formed from the distillation of hydrocarbon fuels and combines with other catalysts to produce plastics through polymerization or polycondensation reactions.
PP 3D printing: PP cannot be used in filament form for 3D printing.
PP CNC processing: PP is used for CNC machining in sheet form. When making prototypes of small quantities of PP parts, we usually CNC machine them. PP requires a high level of skill to cut accurately because of the low annealing temperature, which means it is susceptible to heat distortion.
PP injection molding: Despite its semi-crystalline nature, PP flows very well due to its low melt viscosity, making it easy to mold. This property greatly increases the speed at which the material fills the mold. PP shrinkage is about 1-2%, but can vary depending on a number of factors, including holding pressure, holding time, melting temperature, mold wall thickness, mold temperature, and additive type and percentage.
